Meta Moves On from Celebrity Lookalike AI Chatbots to New Innovations
Meta has decided to shut down its AI chatbots that allowed users to chat with alter-ego versions of celebrities, as reported by The Information. These celebrity chatbots were a highlight of Meta’s announcements at its Connect event last September, but they are now no longer available for interaction.
The decision comes after Meta launched AI Studio, a new tool that lets creators in the US design AI chatbots of themselves. According to a statement from Meta, the company is shifting focus toward this new direction instead of continuing with the handcrafted celebrity bots.

“You can no longer interact with AI characters embodied by celebrities,” Meta spokesperson Liz Sweeney said. “We learned a lot from building them and Meta AI, gaining insights on how people can use AIs to connect and create uniquely. AI Studio represents an evolution, offering a platform for anyone, including people, creators, and celebrities, to create their own AI.”
Meta’s original list of chatbots featured alternate personas for celebrities like Charli D’Amelio (Coco, a “dance enthusiast”), Dwyane Wade (Victor, an “Ironman triathlete motivating you to be your best self”), and Paris Hilton (Amber, a “detective partner for solving whodunnits”). The company had plans to add more, including bots based on Bear Grylls, Chloe Kim, and Josh Richards, but these plans didn’t materialize. According to The Information, Meta had paid millions to some of the celebrities for their likenesses.

Despite the celebrity lookalike bots not achieving the success Meta hoped for, the company remains optimistic about the potential of AI chatbots. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has frequently discussed chatbots’ future potential. Meta has also integrated its Meta AI assistant into Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, highlighting its commitment to advancing AI technology.
