Apple Intelligence: Strengthens AI Focus with New Partnership with OpenAI

Apple is making a significant leap into the world of artificial intelligence, unveiling several new AI features and announcing a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT. This major development was revealed during the Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday afternoon.

This highly anticipated AI partnership marks a historic first for Apple. Analysts have often noted that Apple has been slower to adopt artificial intelligence compared to its tech rivals like Microsoft and Google. However, this new collaboration signals a strategic shift for Apple as it aims to integrate advanced AI capabilities into its ecosystem.

Through this deal, Apple’s vast user base will gain access to OpenAI’s state-of-the-art technology. OpenAI has established itself as a leader in the AI industry, forming significant partnerships with various technology and publishing companies. Among these is a notable multibillion-dollar deal with Microsoft, highlighting OpenAI’s influence and innovation in the field.

With this partnership, Apple is set to enhance its AI offerings, providing users with more sophisticated and intelligent features. This move not only boosts Apple’s AI capabilities but also positions it as a formidable player in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.

New Advancements in Language Comprehension and Generation

Apple Intelligence introduces innovative ways for users to enhance their writing and communicate more effectively. With the new systemwide Writing Tools built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text almost anywhere they write, including in Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

Whether tidying up class notes, perfecting a blog post, or crafting a flawless email, these Writing Tools help users feel more confident in their writing. The Rewrite feature allows users to choose from different versions of their text, adjusting the tone to fit the audience and purpose.

From refining a cover letter to adding humor and creativity to a party invitation, Rewrite ensures the right words for any occasion. Proofread checks grammar, word choice, and sentence structure, offering edits along with explanations that users can review or accept quickly. With Summarize, users can select text and convert it into a digestible paragraph, bulleted key points, a table, or a list.

Apple’s Digital Assistant: Siri

OpenAI will soon be integrated into Apple’s digital assistant Siri, as announced by Apple software chief Craig Federighi during the conference. This integration will enable users to seek assistance with various tasks such as finding recipe ideas, decorating rooms, or composing stories.

“Imagine creating a custom bedtime story for your six-year-old who loves butterflies and solving riddles,” Federighi explained. “You can input your initial idea and send it to ChatGPT.”

This announcement comes amid rapid AI growth, despite some setbacks. AI assistants and chatbots have faced issues like hallucinations, plagiarism, and incorrect or biased responses. OpenAI has also faced controversy, including allegations of copying actor Scarlett Johansson’s voice without permission.

Apple is currently involved in an antitrust lawsuit filed by the Justice Department and 15 states, accusing the company of abusing its monopoly power to stifle competitors and maintain customer loyalty. It remains uncertain how Apple’s new partnership with OpenAI might affect this case.

Following Apple’s announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his excitement on X, formerly known as Twitter:

“Very happy to be partnering with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into their devices later this year! Think you will really like it.”

Apple is also introducing Apple Intelligence, its term for the company’s new generative AI software. Apple Intelligence will offer features like phone call transcription, AI photo retouching, and enhanced natural conversation flow with Siri. The software can also summarize notifications, text messages, articles, documents, and open web pages.
